Thesis Title: Exploring subsurface fluid dynamics of bubble-driven eruptions and unique textures yielded by volatile saturated systems.
I am a third year fully funded student with the E4 Doctoral Training Partnership. My research explores eruption mechanisms in shallow volcanic plumbing systems. I quantify multi-phase flow within complex conduits to understand bubble-driven eruption mechanisms. I also examine volatile interaction with surrounding melt and supercritical fluids via hydrothermal experiments.

2017 – 2021
I developed a taste for experimental volcanology during my integrated masters degree in Physical Geography. I won the LR Moore Prize for distinction in presentation of my thesis ‘Quantifying the behaviour of Taylor bubbles rising through solid-rich suspensions in vertical and inclined conduits: analogue experiments for slug-driven volcanism in basaltic style magmas.’

Research
Fluid Dynamics
Eruption forecasting relies how well we understand the multiphase behaviour of magmas in shallow plumbing systems. I quantify multi-phase flow within vertical & inclined conduits using flow experiments, image tracking, and particle image velocimetry to investigate mechanisms for bubble-driven eruptions e.g. Strombolian explosions.
Gas Monitoring
While my PhD focuses on subsurface conditions and what type of eruption these might generate, my personal interest lies with how the volcanic gases driving these processes can be monitored at the surface. I recently interned at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, where I was involved in monitoring Kilauea’s volcanic plume processes using portable UV-SO2 cameras (PiCam) which are designed for the Raspberry Pi micro-computing system.
Hydrothermal Experiments
I also examine how volatile interaction with surrounding melt and supercritical fluids yields unique textures (specifically micron-scale glass spheres) within the erupted products of volatile-driven eruptions with a series of fast and slow quench petrology experiments.
